Republicans think Democrats are weak on national security — so much so that the White House is more concerned about whether a man can breastfeed than protecting the country, a US senator has claimed.
‘Eye off the Security Ball’
Senator John Kennedy, Republican of Louisiana, was speaking about the Israel-Hamas war on Fox News’ The Story show when he laid into President Joe Biden for being obsessed about transgender issues to the point that he wasn’t focusing on US national security.
Israel’s Defense
Kennedy told The Story host Martha MacCallum that Israel had the right to defend itself against terrorist organizations like Hamas, which controls the Palestinian Gaza Strip.
“Well, I reject the proposition that Hamas is free to intentionally target Israeli children and women. But Israel somehow, morally, is not entitled to defend itself and go after Hamas. Yes, there are casualties– they’re unintended casualties because Hamas is refusing to allow many of the Palestinians to leave,” he said.
‘Being Honest’
The senator, 71, said it was time to get real.
“I think we need to ask ourselves though, Martha, why are we here? And I think we have to be honest with ourselves,” he said.
“America has a president who is not a defense hawk. America has a president whose administration is frankly more interested in discussing whether a man can breastfeed than it is in talking about national security.”
Eruption of Middle East Violence
Hamas, labeled a terrorist organization by the United States as well as other countries, launched a surprise attack on Israel on October 7 that left around 1,400 Israelis dead. Israel responded by firing missiles into the Gaza Strip, re-igniting a decades-old war with its enemy that has killed at least 4,300 Palestinians since it erupted again, according to figures from the Palestinian Health Ministry.
‘Israel’s 9/11’
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu called the Hamas attack “Israel’s 9/11,” referring to the September 11, 2001, strikes on New York and Washington, DC, that killed almost 3,000 people. Countries around the world rushed to offer their support for the Israeli administration.
Biden Israel Visit
In a show of support for the right-wing government of Netanyahu, President Biden flew into Tel Aviv and urged the Israeli leader not to get carried away with anger over the Hamas attack.
“I understand. Many Americans understand. You can’t look at what has happened here … and not scream out for justice,” Biden said at the end of his lightning visit. “But I caution this: While you feel that rage, don’t be consumed by it. After 9/11, we were enraged in the United States. And while we sought justice and got justice, we also made mistakes.”
Netanyahu Hamas Ambitions
But Prime Minister Netanyahu vowed to wipe out Hamas and called on allies around the globe to help Israel achieve its goal.
“The civilized world must unite to defeat Hamas,” he said.
Biden’s ‘Cut and Run’
On Fox News, Senator Kennedy, said President Biden was essentially hopeless regarding overseas policies, and that it risked American lives at home.
“Put yourself in the shoes of our enemies. Russia and Iran and China. What do they see? They see an America whose president cut and run from Afghanistan. Our enemies see an America whose president refuses to give Ukraine the weapons it needs to win,” he said.
‘Cash for Enemies’
Senator Kennedy continued with his criticism of the Biden administration:
“Our enemies see an America whose president refuses to enforce the sanctions on Iranian oil and indeed has tried to give the Iranians over not $6 billion, but $10 billion.”
‘Weak’ President Biden
And the senator suggested that President Biden was so weakened in the eyes of American foes that they were taking advantage of the situation.
“I could continue, but the point is, our enemies have concluded that America has a president who’s a bit of a weenie on national defense, and Xi and Putin and the Ayatollah think they can roll over him like thunder on a summer night. And that’s, I think, why we’re here,” he said.
Biden Re-Election Run
Foreign policy will be high on the agenda of President Biden as he seeks a second term in office, in the presidential election in November 2024. He has announced he will campaign for the Democratic Party nomination, in primaries starting next February, with Vice President Kamala Harris as his running mate. The Republican candidate is likely to be former president Donald Trump, who is polling far ahead of his rivals for the nomination.
