Trump spoke to Kristen Welker of Meet the Press. During the lengthy interview, she asked him if he would sign a Federal 15-week abortion ban if it came to his desk. Trump has previously been noncommittal on the issue and was again questioned. During the exchange, he falsely claimed that Democrats want to be able to terminate “the baby after birth.”
Pro-lifers Had No Rights, Stated Trump

In the interview with Kristen Welker in September, Trump backed his support of the termination of Roe v Wade.
“I did something that nobody thought was possible. And Roe v Wade was terminated was put back to the States. Now, pro-lifers have the right to negotiate, for the first time, they had no rights at all.” Trump stated.
Democrats “Radical” on the Issue of Abortion

Trump further implied in the interview that Democrats had “radical” views on abortion.
“Because the radical people on this are really the Democrats that say after five months, six months, seven months, eight months, nine months, and even after birth, you’re allowed to terminate,” stated Trump, “… the baby,” he concluded.
Trump’s Allegations Against Democrats “Not True”

Kristen Welker responded to Trump’s allegations, contesting their honesty.
“Democrats are not saying that. That’s not true,” she declared.
“Of course, they do,” replied Trump. “They are the radical people,”
Trump Gave Pro-life People “A Voice.”

Trump continued the interview by bragging about how he gave Pro-Life Campaigners a voice.
“I was able to do something which gave at least pro-life people a voice. Now, it’s going to work out. Now, the number of months will be determined.”
Women’s Lives Being Put at Risk

“Does it bother you though, that women say their lives are being put at risk? Do you feel you bear any responsibility because, as you say, you are responsible for having Roe v. Wade?” asked Welker
Trump skirted the question, stating, “… it’s a very polarizing issue.”
Would Trump Sign a Federal Ban?

Kristen Welker then asked the former President, “Would you sign Federal legislation that would ban abortion at 15 weeks?”
“Nope. No…” said Trump as he continued to dodge Welker’s question and continued to imply the Democrats were “radical.”
“If a federal ban landed on your desk, if you were reelected, would you sign it at 15 weeks?” Welker repeated her question.
Welker continued to push Trump to answer, “Would you sign that? “
Trump Goes on the Offensive

After being asked the same question multiple times, Trump replied, “ I’m not going to say I would, or I wouldn’t. I mean, DeSanctus is willing to sign a five week and six week ban,” stated Trump, going on the defensive and bringing up his GOP nominee rival Gov. Ron DeSantis.
Trump Will “Come up With a Number”

“I think what he did is a terrible thing and a terrible mistake.” Trump continued to criticize DeSantis.
“But we’ll come up with a number.” Trump firmly stated.
DeSantis Signed a Six Week Ban

In April, Florida’s Republican Governor, Ron DeSantis, signed a bill passed by the GOP-led state legislature prohibiting abortions after six weeks of pregnancy. This six-week ban will only be enforced if the state’s existing 15-week ban survives a legal challenge in the conservative-controlled state Supreme Court.
“Signed the Heartbeat Protection Act, which expands pro-life protections and devotes resources to help young mothers and families.” DeSantis posted the news on X (Twitter).
“National Defender of Life”

The debate on abortion is substantially impacting the 2024 Presidential election campaign. After the initial GOP presidential debate, Marjorie Dannenfelser, President of SBA Pro-Life America, released a statement. “Tonight’s Republican presidential debate made it clear who is and is not prepared to be a National Defender of Life,” she stated.
An Offensive Position Is “Essential” to Win in 2024

“Going on offense is essential for any candidate who wants to win in 2024.” Dannenfelser continued in her August statement. Confirming the abortion rights debate is clearly a political matter that will impact the 2024 White House race.
No Care Available in States Banning Abortion

The Guttmacher Institute stated in a report on abortion data published in September,
“During January–June 2023, 13 states (Alabama, Arkansas, Idaho, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, Missouri, North Dakota, Oklahoma, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas and West Virginia) had total bans in effect, and legal uncertainty had forced providers to stop offering care in Wisconsin.”

“In these 14 states, abortions in the formal health care system were all but impossible to obtain by 2023,” the Guttmacher Institute stated.
By contrast, the institute reported that in 2020, over 113,000 abortions, or an estimated 12% of all US abortions, previously took place in these states.
The “Magnitude” of “Disruption and Harm”

Guttmacher Institute wrote it was “a data point that quantifies the magnitude of the disruption and harm being inflicted by bans.”
“Such exceptions leave most pregnant people unable to get the abortion they need, and some people have been forced to carry their pregnancy to term.”
States Bordering Ban States Showed Major Increases

The Guttmacher Institute also noted a rise in abortion rates from 2020 to 2023 in states that have implemented measures to safeguard abortion access. The estimates were compared with figures from “a comparable period in 2020.”
Abortions Rise in Some States by 220%

According to the report, in Colorado, abortions increased by 89%, an estimated 5,990 abortions. In New Mexico, abortion numbers increased by 220%, an increase of 6,480 abortions; in South Carolina, abortions rose by 124%, an increase of 3,270 abortions from 2020.
Gov Ron Is a Good Man

In response to Governor DeSantis’s supposedly quiet signing of the bill, a user posted support on Twitter, saying,
“Gov Ron is a good man. IF this is what the majority of the USA is focusing on we have a sad group of ppl that don’t care about the innocent victim the child that never has a say so even with a heartbeat.”
Will Women Lose Their “Reproductive Freedom?”

However, not everyone had supportive words for the ban on abortion. Users responded online to Trump’s comments on banning abortions:
A user wrote, “A republican president and republican congress means that every single American woman will lose her reproductive freedom.”
