A woman shared how her feud with neighbors over her putting the trash out after 7am resulted in her calling to cancel their trash collection.
Five-Bedroom House
She began by saying, “I rent a 5-bedroom house with my husband and two of our friends. Rent is outrageous in our area, $2400 for a 1 bedroom apartment. So we found this house for $3000, which is not a bad deal, while we save up to buy a house.”
Similar Houses in the Neighborhood
She explained that the other houses in the neighborhood are like this too. This included the house next door. It is a 5-bedroom house and they have nine people living there.
Choose Their Trash Company
In their neighborhood, they can choose the trash company they use. This just happened to be the same trash company as the next-door neighbors. The company likes them to have their trash out by 7am.
Sometimes a Little Late
The woman admitted, they don’t always get the trash out that early though, and that’s where this problem started. Most of the time, it doesn’t get picked up until 11am. As long as the trash is out before the pickup truck arrives, they take it.
Three Trash Cans
The people next door have three trash cans, and they are overflowing every single week. They put their trash out the night before, but the neighborhood has raccoons and foxes.
Messy Raccoon
She said, “Wildlife is always getting into the trash. Once, a raccoon got into theirs and left a mess in our yard and they wouldn’t pick it up. I was pretty angry about it but I just let it go and cleaned up their trash.
Put It Back in Their Trashcan
While she was putting the rubbish back in their trashcan, they just sat outside glaring at her. However, none of them said anything to her at the time.
Sick With Covid
Her entire household was sick with Covid a few weeks later. She didn’t manage to take the trash out until almost 9am. Despite feeling a little better, she had forgotten to set the alarm for 7am and slept in.
Yelling
She said, “My neighbor started yelling at me. saying you are supposed to have your trash out by 7am, and I can’t put it out now. I told him they hadn’t come to pick up the trash yet, because their trash cans were full, so it wasn’t a big deal.”
The Rules
He repeated the 7am rule, insisting that it wouldn’t get picked up. She told him she understood that they want the trash out by 7am, but repeated that they hadn’t come to pick it up yet.
A Few Hours Later
The woman, still feeling ill, went back to bed. A couple of hours later, she got up and saw that her household’s trash cans were put to the side of the house and were still full of trash. That meant that someone moved them.
Another Neighbor Told Her
The next day, another neighbor told her that she saw him put their trash cans back. She didn’t know the situation, so she wasn’t going to but in and tell him to not do that.
Flag in the Window
She knew the neighbor’s last name because they had a flag in their front window that had this information on it. So, she called the trash company and claimed to be one of them, saying she needed to set up a vacation hold for their upcoming pickup.
No Problem
They said that was no problem. They only asked for the address, but no other information.
Sat and Watched
The next week, she made sure that their trash was out at 6:45am, then sat and watched for the trash truck. It drove past her neighbors’ house and didn’t pick up their trash, even though it was overflowing. It picked up her household’s and the other few people’s, then left.
Crossed the Line
She finished by saying, “I know I’m a jerk for doing this, you don’t need to tell me, I may have crossed the line. But he also crossed the line too, by touching our cans and moving them and setting foot on our property.”
Could Be Traced
One reader warned the woman to be careful. He said, “It might be hard to trace, but after calling the company to chew them out for not taking their bins and hearing about the vacation hold, it won’t be hard to put 2 and 2 together.”
Keep Doing It
Another suggested, “I’d keep doing this just randomly, they’ll never catch on. You can also save it for any time they annoy you too.”
Crazy Neighbors
Many were in support of the woman, with one man saying, “Having trash out by 7am is not an unbreakable rule. It’s simply what they say so that people who don’t have their trash out that early and miss pickup don’t have a leg to stand on when they call to complain.”
Problems Putting Trash Out Early
Another person suggested a little late, but before pickup is better than putting out the trash the night before. This causes problems like animals getting to it and making a mess.
