A man shared his story of how he got his petty revenge on a concertgoer who assumed he didn’t speak the language and badmouthed him in a phone conversation.
Latina American
He began by saying, “I am a light-skinned Latina American. I lived in Korea for a couple of years during university and grad school.”
Korean Interpretation
His major was Korean Interpretation and Translation. During his time in Korea, he attended music shows from time to time.
Free Shows
He explained that music shows are free to enter, provided you have at least 1 of 3 items. Either a copy of the album of the group you’re coming to see, proof of purchase of the album digitally on one of the approved music vendors in Korea, or the official light stick from their most recent concert.
Fan Club Members
Priority entry was always given to official fan club members who had all 3, followed by fan club members who had 2 of the 3, then fan club members who had one. After that, came non-members in the same priority tier.
First Come, First Served Basis
On this occasion, the group he had come to see hadn’t opened official fan club registration in almost a decade. So, the group’s management decided to do away with the fan club priority and admit people on a first come, first served basis.
Arrived Early
They still kept the 3 items go first, then 2 then 1 requirement. He had all three and got there early, ensuring himself a good spot in the line.
Very Small Venues
He said, “The thing about these music show venues is, they’re very small. They have limited capacity and allow 2-3 fans in at a time, until the venue is full. Not all people who queue for a group get in.”
Fans Taking Pictures
The man went on to say, “In this particular instance, there was trouble with foreign fans causing trouble by taking pictures, and not listening to instructions. That’s why venue staff went through the line and quizzed each foreigner on their Korean.”
He Passed
If you couldn’t understand, you were booted out of the line. He passed the test and kept his spot in line.
The Hate
He described how a lot of Korean fans hated international fans with a passion. They were not happy having to wait in line behind foreigners because they had done away with the official fan club priority.
A Group of Girls
As he stood alone in the queue, a group of Korean girls were in front of him. One of them was talking on her phone.
Curse Words
His attention picked up because she was dropping a lot of curse words. She said, “These foreign roaches are ruining things for us. I want to kill them.”
Bribing Accusations
She also mentioned him in particular, suggesting he had bribed the staff to keep his spot in line, even though he couldn’t understand Korean. This rubbed him the wrong way.
Asked Them To Hold His Space
He asked the girl and her friends to hold his place in line. Then he went to the convenience store and bought a dozen bottles of water.
Handed Them Out
He said, “I thanked the girls in front of me for holding my spot, then gave each of them a bottle of water. I gave water to the group in front of them, too. Then I kept one for myself and handed the last one to the girl on the phone, with a smile.”
Some Advice
She thanked him in English, smiling brightly and taking her phone away from her ear. He continued to smile as he told her in Korean, “The next time you talk rubbish about foreigners, make sure they can’t actually understand you.”
Silence
Everyone around him fell silent. He recalled, “Her smile melted off her face faster than an ice cream cone on a Florida pavement.”
Apologized
She blushed and muttered to her friend on the phone that she had to go, then sheepishly apologized to the man. He graciously accepted.
Felt Better
He told readers that the girl drank the water. and he felt better about himself. He felt that he handled it the best way, with excessive kindness.
Bonus
He finished by saying, “As a bonus, the other girls heard the whole thing and adopted me into their group for the day. Fun was had all around.”
