18 Jobs That Exist Solely Due to Human Stupidity

We all acknowledge the importance of work, yet certain professions hold greater significance than others. In a thought-provoking internet survey, individuals were asked a rather blunt question: “What job exists because we are stupid?” This query challenges us to consider the roles that thrive due to our occasional lapses in judgment or common sense. While the question may seem cynical, it sheds light on certain occupations that cater to human fallibility.

Cold Callers

Phone calls can be a realm that blurs the line between legitimate sales and deceptive schemes. In the case of sales calls, there is often an air of arrogance, relying on the recipient’s naivety. However, when the intention veers into scams involving requests for remote computer access, it becomes outright criminal, targeting individuals who are unsuspecting or gullible. It becomes evident to astute individuals that one should only entertain calls from unknown parties if there is a compelling and easily understandable rationale.

Small Claim Court Judges

The existence of a small claims court could be rendered unnecessary if people ceased their foolish actions and took responsibility for their mistakes. However, it is essential to recognize that this issue extends beyond mere stupidity, often involving individuals who intentionally act in bad faith, refusing to fulfill their obligations or failing to honor settlements despite being liable for damages. Resolving such matters through personal accountability and ethical behavior could significantly reduce the need for small claims courts.

Mechanic

In the world of mechanics, a job has been created for those who overlook the obvious. It’s not uncommon for a perplexed customer to arrive with a peculiar noise complaint, only to have the mechanic quickly locate the source—a mere umbrella hidden under the front seat, for instance. Reflecting on a personal experience, there was a day when an unsuspecting individual reported a broken rear door, unaware of child safety locks. These anecdotes serve as lighthearted reminders that the mechanic’s role encompasses both intricate automotive problems and the occasional oversight of the most straightforward solutions.

Homeopaths

A staggering amount of money is dedicated to the homeopathy field, involving purchasing highly-priced water. It’s pretty amusing when people claim that “Snake Oil Salesmen” and their easily deceived customers are relics of the past. What’s even more astounding is degree programs in homeopathy, where individuals commit themselves to advocating water consumption as a panacea for all ailments. That such a subject, devoid of substantial evidence, can be encapsulated in an actual degree is genuinely remarkable.

Warning Label Creators

One can’t help but wonder about the genius who prompted the need for a curling iron manufacturer to include a warning label specifying its external use only. Perhaps they are related to the girl who infamously gorilla glued her hair to her head. It’s amusing to consider the necessity of cautionary labels stating the obvious, such as reminding individuals that lighter fluid is flammable, rat poison is not edible, or that peanut butter contains peanuts. These instances testify to the unfortunate reality that some warnings are needed for unexpected reasons.

Amazon’s Professional Installers

The true purpose behind Amazon’s “professional installation” service options for seemingly simple items like an external hard drive or a folding music stand has often intrigued me. This job doesn’t primarily cater to stupidity. Instead, it aims to extract additional funds from those who are either too lazy or, in some cases, need to be better informed. It capitalizes on the willingness of individuals to pay for assistance that may not be truly necessary, benefiting both the service providers and a portion of the less-informed customer base.

TurboTax Employees

While many other countries straightforwardly inform their taxpayers about the amount owed or the refund due, our country’s tax system must be more transparent. Due to the influence of lobbyists and a lack of modernization, we now have businesses profiting from the inherent ambiguity of deciphering the IRS’s expectations. However, it’s worth noting that individuals earning less than $72,000 are entitled to free software as per an agreement between these businesses and the IRS. This arrangement prevents state-run software development that could render these businesses obsolete.

Apple Repair Technicians

It is difficult to believe that anyone would be foolish enough to rely on Apple for product repairs… or so one hopes. Many individuals opt for the extended Apple Care warranty, taking advantage of Apple’s repair services until the coverage expires, only to repeat the cycle by purchasing a new device. This pattern of dependence on Apple for repairs continues, ensuring a continuous cycle of warranty renewals and device replacements.

ATM Assistants

In Japan, a dedicated permanent employee is stationed at ATMs to assist users with various tasks such as wire transactions and updating account details. This service proves to be incredibly beneficial, especially for foreigners who may encounter challenges while navigating through unfamiliar ATM functions. The availability of assistance at ATMs is genuinely admirable. Individuals like me would have greatly appreciated it upon moving to a new country.

Sewer Workers

Sewer workers enter the sewer network to dismantle the dreaded “fatbergs” caused by the improper disposal of oil and other items down the drain. While the exact salary remains determined, one can be confident it falls short of the efforts expended. Dealing with fatbergs proves to be a significant nuisance, alongside the frustration caused by individuals who deny disposing of fats, oil, condoms, tampons, pads, q-tips, and baby wipes down the drain.

Desktop Support Technicians

The need for assistance during office moves often arises due to human errors. People inadvertently kick out cords or mistakenly switch off devices, necessitating additional support. Despite the availability of detailed installation instructions on websites, some individuals need help to follow them accurately. The process is relatively straightforward: unplugging all equipment, carefully transporting items to the new location, and reconnecting everything. Taking a picture of the original setup or marking cords beforehand can further simplify the process.

Psychics

It comes as no surprise that the subject of psychics sparks skepticism. The common perception is that they are fraudulent individuals seeking to deceive others. Even when it comes to psychic detectives, their track record of solving cases independently is virtually nonexistent. It’s hard to fathom willingly paying someone to claim intuition and extract information from you, suggesting a level of gullibility or naivety for those seeking their services.

Fraud Prevention

Suppose customers fall victim to scams or disclose their card details to fraudsters. In that case, we will extend our support to recover their funds. However, in an ideal world where everyone exercised utmost care with their banking information, banks would require significantly fewer staff dedicated to fraud prevention and mitigation. It is disheartening to witness the extent of vulnerability demonstrated by some individuals, as highlighted in a video where a person approached random strangers with a clipboard, resulting in many willingly sharing their confidential bank information with a complete stranger.

Live-chat Representatives

Live-chat representatives often find themselves employed due to customers’ occasional lack of attention or impatience. Their role involves answering questions already clearly listed on the product page or providing instructions on how to perform a hard reset, despite the information being readily available elsewhere. While it may seem like a result of stupidity, it’s essential to acknowledge that impatience often plays a significant role in these situations.

ER Workers

Emergency Room workers are undoubtedly highly valued and essential professionals. However, the demand for their services might decrease if individuals exercised greater caution and made wiser decisions. The existence of the infamous Darwin Awards humorously highlights instances where individuals’ foolish actions result in providing job security to hospital workers throughout history.

TV Product Creators

TV product creators often introduce their inventions with an exaggerated tone, targeting those who struggle with seemingly simple tasks like chopping onions. While these products may have been initially intended for individuals with physical disabilities, the companies behind them rely on marketing them to an able-bodied audience under the guise of convenience to sustain their business. This approach allows them to cater to a broader customer base while addressing the original purpose of assisting those with specific needs.

Social Media Influencers

Social media influencers undeniably make a living off their online presence, which does qualify as a job in its own right. As exemplified by Twitch streamer “Ludwig,” who earned an impressive one million dollars in just a month, their financial success can rival that of individuals who earn a living through investments. However, it’s worth noting that some individuals defend influencers despite encounters with unpleasant or unreasonable ones, highlighting their differing perspectives.

Game Console Connector

Best Buy provides a service where they send someone to your home to connect your video game console to the TV, and surprisingly, some people pay for this assistance. This service is still available, although it is only recommended if specifically requested. It typically costs around $100 for the console connection and an additional $100 for setting up PS VR.

The Professions Shaped by Human Fallibility

Reflecting on the question of professions that exist due to human mistakes, we are prompted to recognize the diversity of roles that arise from our occasional lapses in judgment or common sense. Although the question may seem cynical, it reminds us that certain occupations thrive by addressing our vulnerabilities and shortcomings. From tech support personnel assisting with technological mishaps to locksmiths rescuing us from our forgetfulness, these roles underscore the need for understanding and empathy in addressing human fallibility. Ultimately, the question encourages us to appreciate the range of jobs to accommodate and support us in our moments of human error.
